Joni Maloy lost control of the truck she was driving, early Saturday afternoon on Arcadia Drive in Pass Christian, when her tires contacted some recently laid pea-sized gravel on the shoulder of the road.

Being unable to coax the truck back onto the road surface, it decided to, instead, plow through a row of azalea bushes and impacted the only tree in the immediate vicinity at a speed of 30 miles per hour.

She was wearing her seat belt.

With the remainder of her family attending a birthday party in Alabama, she called Bruce and Cindy Bricker of Long Beach on a borrowed Cell Phone, who took her on to Urgicare ... where X-rays revealed a collapsed lung.

Joni remained in the Intensive Care Unit of Memorial Hospital until Sunday morning at 11 AM, when she was moved into room 378. She's expected to remain hospitalized 3-5 days.

"It hurts to cry with a collapsed lung."
