• It's time to prepare to attend the Celebrate the Gulf Marine Education Festival in Pass Christian on October 2, 1999. This year there will be hands-on exhibits galore, a junior catch and release fishing rodeo, demonstrations and a marine cuisine tent where local fishermen and chefs will be demonstrating how to choose, prepare and cook local seafood. "Collage -- A Festival of Art" will also be going on in Pass Christian on the same day. There will be a trolley transporting patrons back and forth between the two events for free!

• Issues concerning the MCI/Worldcom Frame Relay network continue to affect Gulfcoast On-Line Development and customers in a way that not even Hurricane Georges was able to.

• More information regarding the recent Internet outage(s):
  • (5 AM) MCI/Worldcom's frame relay network has been experiencing serious problems for the last six hours or so. Originally thought to be an upgrade gone bad, the cause now is unknown. MCI/Worldcom is now in the process of shutting down and rebuilding different switches, one by one. It is unknown when the Network will stabilize.
  • (5 PM) MCI/Worldcom reports that it is working on switch 15 of 16. The problem has been escalated as far as it can go within MCI/Worldcom.
  • (10 PM) MCI/Worldcom performs warm reboots of the switches within its frame relay network. Periodic outages can be expected to continue through 10:30 PM.

• The first meeting of the Mississippi ISP Association (MISPA.ORG) was held today. For further information see the Mississippi Internet Providers Association web site or the goldinc notes from the meeting.

• They played hard, but lost a game on Sunday in Clinton. Finishing with a record of 1-1-1 at the state tournament, the season for the SMSC U-12 girls team, the Pink Panthers, finally comes to end. The SMSC U-14 boys team, Streak, also had a long drive home. Though these Long Beach teams weren't in any tournament finals, just their presence in Clinton helped make a strong statement regarding South Mississippi Soccer, and Long Beach soccer in particular: We'll be back.

  For instance, the U-10 girls representative from the South Mississippi Soccer Club is now U-10 Girls Champion of the State of Mississippi. Way-to-go Crusaders!

• A South Mississippi girls U-12 Soccer team from Long Beach, the "Pink Panthers", continue their unbeaten post-season winning streak by beating a Hattiesburg team 3-0 in the first round of district competition. The other girls U-12 team from Long Beach, the "Purple People Eaters", is also competing in the district tournament due to their second-place finish in the Club tournament. The South Mississippi Soccer Club's boys U-14 representative is also from Long Beach. Gooooooooooooooooo Long Beach!!!

• After nearly a full week without incident, a networking outage in Chicago leaves goldinc without Internet connectivity for over an hour. Will January never be over?

• Our network provider reports that:

  The network wide problems we experienced on Friday, January 15, 1999 were 
  caused by a faulty trunk.  This trunk is one of our main transports across
  country.  The situation was remedied when we migrated the trunk to a new
  port on our Indianapolis switch.  Since late Friday evening, the trunk has
  been stable.  We will continue to monitor the trunk for ANY abnormalities
  during the next week. 
  

• Routing problems are continuing to be corrected. You may notice periodic inability to reach certain networks during the day. The problem is being worked, but we've been given no estimated time of repair (as of 12:43 PM).

• If the line tests of Tuesday evening weren't enough, Wednesday morning brings a prolonged Internet outage due to upstream "router advertisement" errors. You may scream now, if you'd like.
